Tween Skin Is Not Adult Skin, Here’s What Most Brands Get Wrong

One of the biggest things I wish more people understood is that tween skin is biologically different from adult skin.

Not just emotionally different. Not just “younger.” Actually different.

And as an esthetician, this is where my concern with many tween skincare trends truly begins.

Because so many products being marketed to young girls right now were originally created for adult skin concerns:

  • Aging
  • Collagen loss
  • Pigmentation
  • Advanced acne
  • Texture changes
  • Sun damage

But tween skin is still developing.

The skin barrier is thinner and often far more reactive than adult skin. Hormones are beginning to shift. Oil production may start increasing in some areas while other areas remain dry or sensitive.

This creates skin that can feel confusing to both tweens and parents.

One week the skin may seem oily.
The next week it feels dry.
Tiny breakouts may start appearing.
The nose may become shiny.
The forehead may suddenly develop texture.

And while all of this can feel alarming when it starts happening for the first time, much of it is actually a very normal part of skin development.

The problem is that many young girls are now responding to these normal changes with very aggressive skincare. And honestly, many adults are too.

I think somewhere along the way we started believing that if the skin changes, we immediately need to “attack” the problem.

Dry it out.
Exfoliate it.
Scrub it.
Strip it.
Correct it.

But tween skin often responds better to support than correction. That distinction matters tremendously.

Because when young skin becomes overwhelmed, we often begin seeing:
redness

  • Stinging
  • Dehydration
  • Sensitivity
  • Inflamed breakouts
  • Burning
  • Irritation
  • Tiny bumps
  • Increased oil production

Ironically, many products designed to “clear” the skin can actually disrupt the skin barrier and create even more imbalance.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the belief that if a product is labeled:

  • Natural
  • Organic
  • Botanical
  • Clean

…it automatically means it is gentle. That is not always true.

Certain ingredients that are incredibly popular in skincare can be very irritating for young, sensitive skin. Things like:

  • Peppermint oil
  • Eucalyptus
  • Strong citrus oils
  • Grapefruit extracts
  • Heavily fragranced essential oils
  • Aggressive scrubs
  • Strong exfoliating acids

Even some “clean beauty” products contain ingredients that can overwhelm developing skin barriers.

And this is where education becomes so important. Because tween skin usually does not need intensity.

It needs balance.
It needs hydration.
It needs barrier support.
It needs consistency.
It needs gentle cleansing.
It needs protection.

This is one of the reasons Journee Bloom was created so intentionally.

As both a mom and an esthetician, I wanted products that respected the biology of young skin instead of treating tweens like mini adults.

I wanted skincare that felt:

  • Supportive
  • Calming
  • Gentle
  • Age-appropriate
  • Educational

Not fear-based. Not aggressive. Not rooted in the idea that young girls need to constantly fix themselves.

Because honestly, some texture is normal.
Some oiliness is normal.
Hormonal shifts are normal.
Skin changes during the tween years are normal.

And I think we need to be very careful not to teach young girls that every tiny skin change is a flaw that needs immediate correction.

Healthy skin is not perfectly filtered skin.

Healthy skin is balanced skin.
Resilient skin.
Supported skin.

And sometimes the best thing we can do for tween skin is stop overwhelming it long enough for it to function the way it was designed to.
